Vol. 2018, Issue 1

Welcome to the 2018 edition of Diversity Matters. Improving diversity and inclusion continues to be one of the most difficult endeavors for the legal profession in general, and law firms in particular. We, however, continue to do our part to build a more inclusive profession.

This year, we have signed on to the Mansfield Rule, which measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women, attorneys of color and LGBTQ attorneys — for at least 30 percent of the candidate pool — for leadership and governance roles, partner promotions, senior attorney lateral positions and client pitch teams. We also have set goals to intentionally make sure that all attorneys continue to have equal access to equitable work opportunities, block implicit bias, and involve all attorneys in our diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Our affinity groups continue to grow as we added two more this year: the Asian Pacific American Attorney Network and the South Asian Affinity Group, which have both hit the ground running. As you read this newsletter, we hope you are inspired by the work of our Veterans Group through our Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebrations.

Lastly, we hope you all will join us for our annual Celebrate Diversity event on July 23 in Philadelphia, where this year’s Champion of Diversity award will be presented to Linda F. Friedman, executive vice president and general counsel for Astellas. We look forward to her presentation on "Achieving Diversity Balance in the Legal Profession: Best and Next Practices."
