Joseph C. Guagliardo is a partner in Pepper Hamilton LLP’s Philadelphia and New York offices, where he co-leads the Technology Group and is chair of the Blockchain Practice. He advises on technology transactions and provides general counseling around technology and intellectual property commercialization, including as part of the cross-disciplinary legal services offered under the Technology Group and Pepper’s Emerging Company Program.

With a business background in the software industry and a passion for emerging technology and law, Mr. Guagliardo has a practical appreciation for the business and legal issues faced by his clients. He previously spent more than a decade at an international venture-backed technology company, where he served in various technical and business roles in the design and implementation of capital markets trading and settlement software for banks around the world, including an executive level position overseeing a global team of software engineers and technology consultants.

Mr. Guagliardo has extensive experience counseling clients on both the “buy” and “sell” side of complex technology and intellectual property related commercial transactions and matters, including SaaS agreements, licensing agreements, technology development agreements, joint venture agreements, technology/IP purchase agreements, technology/IP due diligence in M&A transactions, open source strategies, and trademark prosecution and licensing.

He is a technology enthusiast and avid follower of the industry and related legal trends, including the developments around internet of things (IoT), distributed ledger technology and smart contracts, and machine learning in fintech, health care technology and a wide range of other industry applications. 

He is a sought-after speaker and author on emerging technology-related topics and technology and intellectual property commercialization and strategy, including the far-reaching applications of machine learning and blockchain technology. In 2017, he was named a “Top Author” in the JD Supra Readers' Choice Awards for his thought leadership on the emerging topic of blockchain.

Mr. Guagliardo is adjunct professor at Jefferson University where he teaches the Blockchain for Healthcare certificate courses in the Institute of Emerging Health Professions, and Entrepreneurship in the Innovation MBA Program of the Kanbar School of Business. He serves on the board of directors of GoodCompany Ventures and is co-founder of Philadelphia Ethereum Meetup.
