Matthew H. Adler Quoted in Law360 Article, 'Three Things to Consider in Face of Asian Arbitration Boom'
Matthew H. Adler, a partner with Pepper Hamilton, chair of the firm's International and Domestic Arbitration Practice Group and a co-chair of the Commercial Litigation Practice Group, was quoted in the March 17, 2016 Law360 article, "Three Things to Consider in Face of Asian Arbitration Boom."
It's also helpful to have people who are familiar with the law of the seat of arbitration in some cases, Pepper Hamilton LLP partner Matt Adler said. Even though most disputes probably aren't going to be governed under that
body of law, certain procedural aspects of the arbitration will be.
"You may get into procedural disputes about the law of the seat and when that comes up, there's going to be arguments about, [for instance], what will Singapore do about the appointment of an arbitrator," he said.
"That's where I'm going to call upon a Singapore lawyer whether or not they're on my case itself, [and] you might be advantaged in having an office there because those people would be in your own firm."
...
And from both a business perspective and a lawyer's perspective, the additional work is worth the extra hassle that can come with not having a physical office in the region, Adler said. His firm, Pepper Hamilton, only has offices in the U.S., but the firm's international arbitration practice is a common player in Asia.
