Joseph Sullivan, Pepper’s pro bono director, gave remarks during the presentation of the Harrison Tweed Award at the American Bar Association’s annual meeting in San Francisco on August 9. The Harrison Tweed Award recognizes state or local bar associations for exceptional public service. The 2019 Award was presented to the Philadelphia Bar Association for the work of its Civil Gideon and Access To Justice Task Force, which Joe has co-chaired for several years. The ABA singled out the Task Force particularly for its landlord-tenant working group. Joe and a colleague presented on the successful effort by the Task Force, working with the Mayor’s office and City Council, to obtain new funding directed to providing legal representation to low-income tenants, beginning with $500,000 in 2018 and climbing to $1.5 million for fiscal year 2020.
