Pepper Lawyers’ Availability for Speaking Engagements Regarding the Dover ‘Intelligent Design’ Trial
Eric Rothschild and Stephen Harvey, lawyers in the Philadelphia office of Pepper Hamilton LLP, served as counsel for the plaintiffs in the landmark “intelligent design” trial of Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District in 2005. The trial led to a ruling by Federal Judge John E. Jones III that intelligent design is a particular religious view, is not science, and cannot be presented in biology class in public schools in Dover, Pennsylvania (Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, 400 F. Supp. 2d 707 (M.D. Pa. 2005)).
Mr. Rothschild’s and Mr. Harvey’s efforts on behalf of the plaintiffs in this case have been the subject of numerous news stories and magazine articles, including The New Yorker (Dec. 5, 2005) and Harper’s (Feb. 2006). Mr. Rothschild and Mr. Harvey have appeared on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Lou Dobbs Tonight and the C-SPAN program Close-Up, and have spoken about the case to numerous civic, legal, educational, religious and scientific organizations. More information about them and the Dover case may be found at http://www.pepperlaw.com/doverID.aspx.
Their presentation, which can include audio and visual exhibits, can last between 30 minutes and two hours, plus questions, and covers such topics as:
- the history and outcome of the Dover intelligent design trial
- the evidence used to prove at trial that intelligent design is religion and not science
- the scientific evidence presented at trial about evolution and intelligent design
- the legal history of efforts to teach creationism in public schools
- the fundamental legal issues presented by intelligent design and other anti-evolution measures
- the status of anti-evolution measures before various state legislatures and education boards
- the implications for religious freedom presented by intelligent design and other anti-evolution measures.
