Joel M. Friedman is of counsel in the White Collar Litigation and Investigations Practice Group of Pepper Hamilton LLP, resident in the Philadelphia office.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Friedman was a partner at Freeh Sporkin & Sullivan, LLP and represented corporations and individuals in civil, regulatory and criminal matters. He also conducted internal investigations on behalf of clients and worked with them to design and implement compliance programs. He has represented clients before the United States Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and other agencies.

Mr. Friedman had a distinguished 28-year career at the U.S. Department of Justice, capped by 22 years as the chief prosecutor in charge of organized crime prosecutions for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where he worked closely with Louis J. Freeh. He also served as the Deputy U.S. Attorney and chief ethics officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia. Before Philadelphia, he was assigned by the Organized Crime Section of the Justice Department to the Southern District of New York and then Boston. Prior to establishing his own firm with Richard Levan, Mr. Friedman was a partner at Dilworth Paxson LLP in Philadelphia, where he headed the firm’s White Collar Practice Group.

Mr. Friedman has participated in an FCPA monitorship of an international car manufacturer. He has also conducted an internal investigation on behalf of a major casino corporation. He has conducted internal reviews or investigations in Chile, Poland, India, Italy, Germany, Japan, England, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Mr. Friedman served as a member of the International Association of Independent Private Sector Inspector Generals, an organization established to monitor the administration of publicly awarded funds while reporting directly to regulators.
