Sharon R. Klein Quoted in The Legal Intelligencer Article, 'Lawyers Had Big Hand in Las Vegas Electronics Show'

Sharon R. Klein, partner in the Corporate and Securities Practice Group of Pepper Hamilton and chair of the Privacy, Security and Data Protection practice, was quoted in the January 7, 2016 The Legal Intelligencer article, "Lawyers Had Big Hand in Las Vegas Electronics Show."

Going back to the earlier years of CES, the displays were of "pure technology" by companies like Samsung or Apple, said Pepper Hamilton Irvine, California, partner Sharon R. Klein. Now, it has morphed into the smart home or the smart car and other Internet of Things categories "that are interfacing with consumers in collecting data in ways that may not be immediately transparent to the end user," she said.

Regulators understand that consumers are OK with giving up some of this private information—like the driver who allows a black box to be put on their car for their insurance company to track whether they really are a "safe driver"—as long as the consumer is fully aware of what is being tracked and consents to it, Klein said.
