Sharon R. Klein and Angelo A. Stio III Designated as Certified Information Privacy Professionals
Pepper Hamilton partners Sharon R. Klein and Angelo A. Stio III have earned the designation of Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the largest and most comprehensive global information privacy community and resource. Founded in 2000, the IAPP is a not-for-profit organization that helps define, support and improve the privacy profession globally.
The CIPP/US designation is credentialed to those who have demonstrated a strong foundation in U.S. privacy laws and regulations and an understanding of the legal requirements for the responsible transfer of sensitive personal data to/from the United States, the European Union and other jurisdictions. The CIPP/US program launched in October 2004 as the first professional certification ever to be offered in information privacy.
Ms. Klein and Mr. Stio, who are both members of Pepper’s Privacy, Security and Data Protection Group, join a select number of attorneys who have earned the CIPP/US credential, which is sought primarily by privacy officers, compliance officers, auditors, information security specialists and other privacy professionals.
Sharon R. Klein (CIPP/US)* is a partner in the Corporate and Securities Practice Group of Pepper Hamilton. Ms. Klein is the partner in charge of the firm’s Orange County office and the chair of the Privacy, Security and Data Protection Group. She handles a variety of corporate and intellectual property matters, in particular, helping technology and outsourcing clients grow and succeed. Ms. Klein advises businesses on planning, drafting and implementing privacy, security and data protection policies and “best practices;” compliance with applicable laws, regulations and rules; and crisis management and litigation strategies for noncompliance. Ms. Klein received her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University (B.A., summa cum laude, 1975) and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her law degree from Temple University School of Law (J.D. 1978), where she was executive editor of the Temple Law Review and a member of moot court. Following her graduation from law school, she was a law clerk to the Honorable J. William Ditter, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Angelo A. Stio III (CIPP/US)* is a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department of Pepper Hamilton and a member of the firm’s Privacy, Security and Data Protection Group, where he regularly counsels health care, financial services and educational institution clients on data privacy and security issues. Mr. Stio is an experienced trial attorney who litigates matters in state and federal courts throughout the country. He has been included in the annual New Jersey Super Lawyers lists for 2011–2015 for business litigation. He handles complex commercial disputes, class actions and derivative suits; corporate governance disputes; and college and university litigations. Mr. Stio is a former law clerk to the Honorable Robert Muir, Jr. of the New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division. He received a J.D., magna cum laude, from Seton Hall University Law School, an M.P.A. from Seton Hall University’s Center for Public Service and a B.S. from Seton Hall University’s Stillman School of Business.
