Washington, D.C. – June 12, 2012 – Pepper Hamilton LLP announced that James A. Thompson, Jr. has joined the firm as of counsel in the Environment and Energy Practice Group, resident in the Washington office.

Mr. Thompson has practiced environmental and energy law for over 30 years, including seven years as counsel in the New England and Rocky Mountain regional offices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and three years as senior counsel reporting directly to the Agency’s general counsel on all environmental and energy matters arising in the western half of the United States.

Mr. Thompson represents large industries and utilities on a wide range of complex environmental permitting, compliance and project development issues throughout the United States. In the past several years, a substantial portion of his practice has been devoted to the siting of natural gas and renewable energy facilities and the acquisition and sale through auctions and direct negotiations of utility assets and companies.

John W. Carroll, head of Pepper’s Environment and Energy Practice Group, said, “Jim adds a depth and breadth of experience in both the environmental and energy areas that nicely complements Pepper’s existing practices.” Jane C. Luxton, the head of Pepper’s Sustainability, Clean Tech, and Climate Change Team, noted that, “Increasingly, legal representation in the energy arena must combine understanding of the new technologies, the impact of the project on sustainability and climate change, as well as traditional environmental concerns. Jim brings experience in all of those areas to Pepper.”

Prior to joining Pepper, Mr. Thompson was chairman of the Global Environmental, Health and Safety Practice and head of the U.S.-based Climate Change Practice Group at Dewey & LeBoeuf in Washington.

Mr. Thompson earned his law degree from The George Washington University Law School in 1973. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.
