Eli Segal Successfully Represents Media Organizations in Motion to Release Jurors' Names in Cosby Case

Eli Segal, an associate and a member of the firm's Media and Commercial Litigation Practice Groups, has successfully represented several media organizations in their request to have the jurors' names involved in the Bill Cosby case released. When Montgomery County Judge Steven T. O’Neill originally declined to release the names, Mr. Segal sought their immediate release, explaining that the information was of “extraordinary public importance” and the news outlets had a First Amendment right to it. Without such disclosure, Mr. Segal wrote to the Court, “the ‘value of openness itself’ – a fundamental pillar of our judicial system in this country – is threatened.’” Judge O’Neill then held a hearing on the issue, after which he upheld the First Amendment right that Mr. Segal advocated and ordered the immediate release of the names. The media organizations Mr. Segal represented are Philadelphia Media Network, which publishes Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com, PA Media Group, which publishes The Patriot-News and PennLive.com, PG Publishing Co., Inc., which publishes the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Post-Gazette.com, and WHYY, Inc., which broadcasts WHYY-TV and WHYY-FM and publishes NewsWorks.org.
