The initiatives are still nascent, but consumer polls are showing that the “tide is for legalization,” according to Pepper Hamilton LLP partner Alva C. Mather, a Philadelphia-based attorney who has represented growers and dispensaries in the Garden State as well as in neighboring Pennsylvania and New York.
“I would challenge anyone to find a government entity that is not looking for a new, major tax revenue base,” Mather told Law360.
Mergers and acquisitions will be inevitable as the Garden State marijuana market matures, giving that sector of law a piece of the cannabis pie, according to Pepper Hamilton’s Mather. Chair of the firm’s alcoholic beverage industry practice group, Mather cited the efficiencies and increased margins that beer and spirits empires have enjoyed from consolidation, and believes marijuana entrepreneurs will follow suit.
