Philadelphia (May 31, 2012) - Pepper Hamilton LLP announced that Thomas J. Cole, Jr., partner in the firm’s Labor and Employment Group, has been appointed managing partner of the firm, effective January 1, 2013. Cole will succeed Robert E. Heideck, who will conclude 10 years of service in this role at the end of the year and return to the full-time practice of law.
Cole, who will focus on the firm’s legal practices and operations, will report to Pepper’s recently appointed CEO, Scott Green.
“Tom Cole is an outstanding choice as managing partner,” said Nina Gussack, chair of the firm’s Executive Committee. “He has served as a member of the Executive Committee for six years, held the post of vice chair of that Committee, and has chaired Pepper’s Associates Committee. He has a deep knowledge of and familiarity with the firm.
“Even more noteworthy is the respect and trust he has earned from his fellow Partners.”
Gussack added that Cole’s selection solidifies the strong executive management team that the firm has put in place. In February, Pepper appointed Scott Green as CEO of the firm. Pepper became one of a handful of law firms in the nation to appoint a non-lawyer CEO to manage the firm.
“The management model we have built at Pepper is a strong one,” she said. “Closely mirroring the management structure of many of our corporate clients, it serves our goal of delivering excellent legal services efficiently and effectively.”
Cole, who is based in Pepper’s Philadelphia headquarters, will begin collaborating with Heideck and Green to ensure a seamless transition of leadership over the next six months.
“I look forward to working even more closely with Pepper’s leadership and its 500-plus attorneys and 12 offices nationwide,” Cole said. “All of the partners at Pepper share a common goal of delivering first-class legal services to our clients. I am honored to be part of the team responsible for delivering on that.”
Gussack praised Heideck for his service to the firm. “Bob has led us through some very turbulent times in the industry,” she said. “We appreciate his steady leadership over the past years.”
Heideck will return to full-time practice in Pepper’s Construction Litigation Practice.
Cole joined Pepper Hamilton in 1996 and was elected Partner in 2000. He graduated cum laude from New England School of Law. He also holds a B.A. from Brown University.
