PHILADELPHIA – May 8, 2012 – Responding to growth in client demand for intellectual property transactional and litigation services, the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP has expanded its intellectual property practices and reorganized them into a new department of the firm.

“This change reflects the growth of the firm’s intellectual property practices, as well as the growing importance of providing a full range of IP services to our clients,” said Robert E. Heideck, Pepper’s Executive Partner. “The implementation of the new organizational structure will allow us to more effectively manage our professional complement and more efficiently deliver our services to our clients.”

Pepper Hamilton’s Intellectual Property Department will be led by Vincent V. Carissimi, a senior partner based in the Philadelphia office who has extensive experience in copyright, trademark, trade secret and unfair competition matters, and William D. Belanger, a partner based in the firm’s Boston office and a highly experienced patent trial lawyer. The department is organized in two key practice groups -- the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group and the Intellectual Property Transactions and Rights Management Practice Group. The leaders of the IP Litigation Practice Group will be Paul J. Kennedy, a trademark and copyright partner based in Philadelphia, and Michael T. Renaud, a patent trial lawyer based in Boston. The leaders of the IP Transactions and Rights Management Practice Group will be Raymond A. Miller, a partner in the Pittsburgh office and registered patent attorney with extensive experience in the life sciences, and Peter T. Wakiyama, a partner in the Philadelphia office with deep experience in IP and technology transactions.

Carissimi noted that the firm’s intellectual property team has grown to more than 70 lawyers, patent agents, technology specialists and other IP professionals. Thirty of those professionals have joined the firm since the beginning of 2010.

“I’m excited about what we’ve been able to accomplish for our clients, and the growth we’ve experienced,” Carissimi said. “We take IP very seriously and are committed to offering our clients the deepest and most integrated team possible. This expansion and reorganization is a reflection of that commitment.”

Belanger said that the firm’s integrated IP approach is particularly attractive to clients.

“The way we practice IP at Pepper Hamilton is much broader and deeper than many firms,” he said. Belanger said that one of the unique hallmarks of Pepper’s IP Department is its seamless integration of the firm’s litigation, transactional, corporate, patent and technology capabilities. He said Pepper’s hybrid model responds to clients’ diverse needs with an economical and highly effective process that is not characteristic of most law firms.

Pepper’s IP Department represents clients in telecommunications, life sciences, chemicals, electrical and computing devices, software, manufacturing, private equity, e-commerce and other industries. Clients range from scientists and inventors to investors, business executives and other entrepreneurs.

“We like to view our department as working at the intersection of finance, technology and law. We have mastered the language of both the investor and the tech executive,” said Carissimi. “These practice areas don’t fit into independent slots. Rather, they are parts of an integrated approach to serving the client.”

Pepper’s IP services include a full suite of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, unfair competition, and other IP-related counseling and litigation advice. The firm also has a widely recognized practice in patent litigation before the International Trade Commission, which has become an increasingly important forum for patent enforcement. On the transactional side, the firm advises clients on how to maximize and protect the value of their IP assets, and assists in licensing, acquisition, disposition and management of IP.
