Investing in Financial Institutions: Opportunities and Pitfalls

Monday, November 16, 2009

The current financial environment provides an ideal climate for outside investments in financial institutions. Federally-insured banks are failing almost every week, and federal regulators are requiring banks to increase their capital holdings. This environment and the potential for a high rate of return are attracting activist investors to banks. In some cases, outside investors are friendly to management; in other instances, investors have their own plans that may be adverse to the interests of current directors and bank management.

Join us as we examine the key legislative and regulatory issues involved in investing in financial institutions, and how the rules change when the target institution is a failed bank. Our panel also will examine the litigation strategies that investors have employed when launching an activist shareholder campaign, as well as defenses that bank management should consider when defending against such a campaign. Our experienced speakers also will look at some of the current financial factors that investors should consider in determining whether to invest in a target bank.
