Firm Culture

At its roots, the firm’s culture revolves around client centricity – we are fully committed to devoting the institutional resources of the firm to help each client succeed. This attitude is reflected in the firm’s Vision Statement, which begins with this sentence: We counsel each client as if it were our only client.® We frequently create interdisciplinary teams from multiple practice groups and offices to serve our clients.

Our client-centric focus also means we understand how critical it is that everyone at the firm works together. We place a great deal of emphasis on teamwork, cooperation, communication, and close integration across practices and offices. A large law firm does not have to be – indeed, to be successful we submit it cannot be – a cold, impersonal place to work. Pepper people respond immediately to requests for help, take interest in what their colleagues are doing, and fully understand that profits alone are not the basis for a long-term, successful partnership.

Our firm also is very welcoming to lateral attorneys. Fourteen of the firm’s 20 current department heads and practice group leaders are laterals (three joined as associates; 11 as partners), and there are more laterals on our Executive Committee than “lifers” who have practiced their entire careers at Pepper.
