Established
1979
The Detroit office is located in the recently renovated Renaissance Center on the Detroit River and is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2009. (Download a copy of the 30th Anniversary brochure.) The firm’s practice in Detroit has grown rapidly since 1979. From an original emphasis on labor relations law, including the related fields of occupational safety and health and employment discrimination counseling and litigation, the Detroit office has expanded to include bankruptcy and reorganization, corporate and securities (including venture capital and SBIC), energy, environmental (litigation and regulatory), employment, litigation, public finance, real estate and tax matters. The office offers clients all the resources of a large, multi-office firm with a national and international practice.
Several of Pepper’s national practices are based in Detroit. Our bankruptcy and reorganization lawyers represent creditors’ committees, debtors and trustees in cases throughout the country. A Detroit partner leads the firm’s nationally known SBIC practice. A senior litigator rejoined the office in 2000 after serving as Chief of Staff of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Another partner leads the team of lawyers handling all the legal work for a major glass manufacturer.
Pepper partners have led the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, major sections of the State Bar of Michigan (including the real property and environmental sections) and INSOL, the leading international organization of bankruptcy professionals.
Our lawyers have:
- served as lead counsel in a court-appointed independent investigation of Spiegel, Inc., a large public company charged by the SEC with fraud and reporting violations; the Independent Examiner’s Report concerning that investigation was filed with the federal court in September 2003
- represented a national stock brokerage firm in state court litigation involving claims for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud
- represented creditors’ committees in large reorganization cases such as Fleming Companies, Inc.; Revco D.S., Inc.; Interco, Incorporated; Harvard Industries, Inc.; Phar-Mor, Inc.; and Cumberland Farms, Inc.
- represented debtors in major turnarounds and reorganizations such as Peregrine, Inc.; Venture Stores, Inc.; Pacor, Inc.; Amatex Corporation; Midcom Communications' DI Distributors, Inc.; and Regal Communications Corp.
- assisted in the formation of a private acquisition company, its reorganization into a public company and its acquisition of businesses with sales in excess of $500 million
- assisted in the organization of venture capital companies with assets in excess of $1 billion, and represented such venture capital firms and large public employee pension funds in connection with their investments.
