Jonathan Kane is a partner in the Philadelphia and Berwyn offices of Pepper Hamilton LLP and chairman of the firm’s Labor and Employment Group.
Mr. Kane is a Fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, the highest honor given an attorney in the labor and employment area. Mr. Kane concentrates on working with clients to understand, resolve or avoid the most difficult employment issues. His practice includes strategic counseling, meeting and averting union organizational and corporate campaigns, collective bargaining negotiations, labor-related litigation, arbitration proceedings, proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, employment litigation, counseling and training, unfair competition proceedings, and the labor and employment aspects of acquisitions and other corporate transactions. He also counsels employers on the prevention of violence in the workplace, the legal aspects of drug abuse policies and practices in the workplace, and harassment issues and dispute resolution systems.
Mr. Kane has lectured on the labor relations aspects of merges and acquisitions, psychology and collective bargaining, union organization campaigns, violence in the workplace, drug abuse in the workplace, AIDS, workplace privacy, the ADA and the FMLA. He co-authored “Understanding the Real Risks of Changing Employee Benefit Plans,” which was published by Benefits Quarterly in second quarter 2005. He is the author of “A Legal History of the Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Act of 1966,” which was first published in the Second Report of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse, Drug Use in America: Problem in Perspective and then republished in a modified version in Legal Aspects of Drug Dependence, which was published by CRC Press in 1975. Mr. Kane also co-authored NLRB Remedies for Unfair Labor Practices, which was published by The Wharton School in 1986.
Mr. Kane is a member of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations, and is co-chair of the Pro Bono Work Committee of the American Bar Association’s Section of Labor and Employment Law. He is the immediate past management chair of the Practice and Procedure Committee Under the NLRA of the Employment Section of the ABA.
Mr. Kane’s past service includes member of the Planning Commission of Tredyffrin Township (Chester County, Pennsylvania), chairman of the Planning Commission of Easttown Township (Chester County, Pennsylvania), member of the board of directors of the Eagleville Foundation and chairman of the board of directors of Eagleville Hospital. He was vice chairman of the Mayor’s Drug and Alcohol Executive Commission of the City of Philadelphia, and served as a member of the White House Blue Ribbon Drug and Alcohol Committee.
Mr. Kane is admitted to practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and other state courts. He also is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the District of Columbia Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Kane received an honorable discharge from active duty with the United States Army in 1971. He was a special operations officer and served a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star medal.
