Paul K. Legaard

Paul K. Legaard is a partner in the Berwyn office of Pepper Hamilton LLP. Dr. Legaard is a patent attorney who handles all aspects of intellectual property. His practice is concentrated particularly in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, biotechnology, biomedical devices, scientific instrumentation, and oligonucleotide, small molecule and polymer chemistry industries.

Areas of Dr. Legaard’s expertise include:

  • patent procurement: prosecution, patentability assessment, reissues, reexaminations, and appeals before the USPTO
  • due diligence: inventorship and ownership analysis; portfolio analysis including inequitable conduct issues and scope assessment; and freedom to operate and validity searches, analyses, and opinions for all types of licensing and financing deals
  • transactional: material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, collaboration agreements and licensing
  • client counseling: patent application and claim drafting strategies, prosecution strategies, related regulatory issues and foreign filing strategy.
Dr. Legaard joined Pepper from Cozen O’Connor in Philadelphia. Prior to that, he had practiced at Woodcock Washburn LLP, a Philadelphia patent boutique, for nearly ten years.

Dr. Legaard received his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, Minn.) (B.A. 1986). He completed his fourth year in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, and received his doctoral training in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Ph.D. 1991). After post-doctoral training at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital (Columbia, Mo.) and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Legaard received his J.D. in 1997 from Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Dr. Legaard is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and registered before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
